The Ibiza ST, From £12,070 RRP..!.
Coinciding with its showroom debut in the UK this month SEAT is today revealing full price and specification details of its new Ibiza ST.

The exciting third ‘silhouette’ in the SEAT line-up joins the sporty Ibiza SC and practical Ibiza 5dr to make today’s Ibiza range the most extensive in the Spanish supermini’s 25-year history.

Another sleek product of the pen of SEAT’s chief designer, Luc Donckerwolke, the estate version of SEAT’s biggest seller is, clearly, created to offer more carrying capacity without compromising on the sporty style that makes the Ibiza one of the most dynamic and eye-catching superminis on the road.

Boot space is up 138 litres over the 5dr taking the car’s carrying capacity to a sizable 430 litres (seats up) meaning, among other things, that the ST offers a great value alternative to many apparently larger family hatchbacks from the class above.

Offered from launch with a broad variety of engines, including sporty turbocharged petrols and frugal latest generation turbodiesels, and with the option of a familiar five-speed manual or hi-tech seven-speed DSG gearbox, the new SEAT is even available to order in super-frugal Ecomotive form, with CO2 emissions confirmed at a road tax-busting 92 g/km and an exceptional combined fuel economy figure of 80.7 mpg.

The extensive array of modern engines includes a newly EUV-compliant 1.4 and rises to a turbocharged 1.2-litre TSI that’s available with manual or ‘self-shifter’ DSG ‘box. Diesel Ibiza ST buyers are offered the choice of a refined 75 PS 1.2-litre TDI CR – also available in the Ecomotive version – or a potent 1.6-litre TDI CR that’s good for 105 PS at 4,400 rpm.

Performance is fully in keeping with the Spanish brand’s sporty ethos and the most dynamic version at launch, the 1.2 TSI with DSG-auto, covers the 0-62 mph dash in a spirited 10.1 seconds before charging on, where legal, to a top speed of 118 mph.

Clearly, Ibiza ST buyers will be looking for practicality as well as sporty style, though, and to that end the new car includes a selection of common sense features that make it as ‘sensible’ as it is ‘chic’.

Split folding rear sears with a 60/40 bias, sleek roof rails in either black or chrome finish, a carefully designed low load height and wide rear hatch, a flat boot floor and innovative storage options throughout the ST’s smart interior enable it to work with effortless efficiency.

Available to order now in SEAT’s familiar and clear model line-up of S A/C, SE and Sport, the new Ibiza ST costs from just £12,070 RRP for the entry-level 1.4-litre 16V S A/C. Prices rise through engine and equipment levels to a current ceiling of £14,910 for the Ibiza ST 1.2 TDI CR Ecomotive in luxurious SE spec.

No matter what their budget, though, all Ibiza ST buyers can look forward to a generous complement of standard-fit kit including, among much else: air conditioning; four-speaker stereo radio with MP3-compatible CD and AUX-in; steering column-mounted audio controls; electric front windows; roof rails; speed sensitive electro-hydraulic power steering; volumetric alarm and remote central locking with deadlocks.

Like its Barcelona-built cousins the Ibiza SC and Ibiza 5dr, the new Ibiza ST boasts a liberal list of safety features as standard. All versions feature head and chest airbags for both driver and front seat passenger, head-thorax front side airbags, front passenger airbag disconnection, ABS and three three-point rear seatbelts.

Optionally available, depending on engine and spec choices, are other features such as SEAT’s clever electronic XDS system – which mimics the function of a conventional limited slip differential – and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP).

On the subject of options, Ibiza ST buyers are able to specify an extensive array of extras to make their new car even more luxurious. Among the items available are: climate control (including a refrigerated glove compartment); Bi-xenon headlights with AFS, headlight washers and daytime running lights; a panoramic glass sunroof (in lieu of roof rails) and a variety of alloy wheels that, depending on spec, can measure up to 17 inches.

Welcoming the latest addition to the stylish Ibiza ‘family’ SEAT UK Product Manager Andy McGregor said: ‘Our new ST shows that small cars really can be both roomy and stylish.

‘The car’s arrival in SEAT showrooms makes the Ibiza line-up not only the most extensive in our history but, also, the most practical and attractive. I’m sure we’ll see the new Ibiza ST carve out a very successful niche for itself as buyers latch onto its great looks, flexibility and convenience.’

 MINI: SET TO JOIN THE...

 World Rally Championship From 2011..!.
MINI is making a comeback on the international rally circuit. From 2011, the brand will compete at selected rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and will go on to contest the entire season from 2012 onwards. This involvement is planned for several years.

The car charged with this task is the MINI Countryman WRC, which is being developed by Prodrive, in close cooperation with MINI, and is based on the production model. The powerful heart of the racing car is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged engine from BMW Motorsport. The car complies with the new Super2000 regulations put in place by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), which stipulate the use of turbo engines with 1,600 cc displacement and four-wheel drive combined with an increased emphasis on road relevant technologies. The result is a significant 25 per cent reduction in overall costs. The first test drive for the MINI Countryman WRC, which will also be available to customer teams, is planned for autumn 2010.

This decision sees MINI continue its success story in the world of rallying. In the 1960s, the MINI Cooper S caused a sensation with victories at the legendary Monte Carlo Rally. The company also tasted success on many occasions in the European Rally Championship. Having already demonstrated the sporty character of its models in many countries in the MINI CHALLENGE, the brand is now taking its presence in motorsport to a new level with the commitment to the WRC.

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, says: “I am delighted MINI will be represented on one of the most popular stages in international motorsport. The success enjoyed on the rally circuit has made a vital contribution to the image of the brand. MINI customers have always shown great interest in motorsport. I am convinced we will add a few more chapters to our success story in rallying. The MINI Countryman provides an excellent basis, from which to create a competitive racing car for the world championship. In Prodrive, we have a strong and experienced partner. We will work hard together over the coming months to ensure we get the project on track right from the word go.”

“This is a very exciting new motorsport programme,” said Prodrive Chairman, David Richards. “During the 1960s MINI captured the imagination of the world when the tiny car took on the might of V8 powered Fords and won what was then one of the toughest motorsport events, the 4000km Monte Carlo rally. I believe our new MINI will become a firm favourite of the latest generation of rally fans, just as it is adored by its millions of owners across the world. We already have a significant number of confirmed customer orders for the new MINI rally car with the first deliveries scheduled for the start of the 2011 season.”

Prodrive has been working on developing the MINI Countryman WRC since early 2009. The company was formed in 1984 by Richards, who won the World Rally Championship as co-driver to Ari Vatanen (FI) three years earlier. Based in Banbury (GB), Prodrive has developed into a leading independent company in the motorsport and automobile sector under Richards' guidance, and today employs over 500 staff. Prodrive's many successes currently include six overall victories in the World Rally Championship, five titles in the British Touring Car Championship and three class victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours (FR).

BMW was present when the World Rally Championship made its debut back in 1973. Achim Warmbold (DE) and Jean Todt (FR) tasted victory in their BMW 2002 at the Alpenfahrt Rally in Austria. However, MINI's tradition in this discipline stretches back even further: Pat Moss (GB) clinched the first victory with the MINI 850 at the 1959 Mini Miglia National Rally. MINI ultimately enjoyed its finest hours at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967: the MINI Cooper S celebrated three overall victories at the most iconic rallying event in the world. Paddy Hopkirk (IR, 1964), Timo Mäkinen (FI, 1965) and Rauno Aaltonen (FI, 1967) joined the list of winners at this prestigious event. In 1965, “Rally Professor” Aaltonen also won the European Rally Championship. Tony Ambrose (GB) and Mäkinen finished second and third to round off an excellent overall result for the MINI Cooper S. In addition, MINI drivers also enjoyed many individual wins at renowned rallies throughout Europe. The last BMW World Rally Championship victory was achieved in 1987 in Corsica by Bernard Béguin (FR) driving a BMW M3 which was built and run by Prodrive.

 GENTEX: SEES BRIGHT FUTURE...

 For Autpmatic High Beams..!.
Company begins shipping its SmartBeam feature for nine Volkswagen models

Gentex Corporation, the automotive industry’s leading supplier of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors and camera-based active-safety systems, has announced that its SmartBeam high-beam assist system is now being offered on nine Volkswagen vehicle models. This is the first time that SmartBeam has been offered on Volkswagen models.

Specifically, the Gentex SmartBeam feature is now available as an option in Europe on the VW Eos, Golf, Jetta, Jetta Sportswagen, Passat, Passat CC, Scirocco, Touran and Sharan.

SmartBeam uses a miniature camera-on-a-chip combined with algorithmic decision-making to automatically operate a vehicle's high beams in order to optimise their usage according to surrounding traffic conditions. The system maximises forward lighting while eliminating the repetitive task of turning the high beams on and off manually.

SmartBeam is integrated into a Gentex auto-dimming mirror, which automatically darkens to eliminate glare from the headlamps of vehicles approaching from the rear.

“Gentex’s SmartBeam system was the first of its kind, and it continues to gain popularity around the world,” said Gentex senior vice president Enoch Jen. “This rollout across the VW Group shows how the feature is helping to improve forward lighting and driver safety on vehicles in every market segment, including compact cars, SUVs and minivans.”

Gentex’s SmartBeam was designed to optimise high-beam usage on any type of vehicle. In the case of the VW Group, SmartBeam is controlling the auto high-beam function on a range of vehicles, from the VW Golf compact car to the spacious, multi-purpose Sharan.

“SmartBeam’s success is the basis for a whole new category of adaptive lighting technologies that are currently being developed,” continued Jen. “The product’s debut marked the first time a camera system was successfully used to optimise forward lighting, and now it’s rapidly becoming a ‘must-have’ feature across all vehicle segments.”

The next generation of SmartBeam products will not only automate high- and low-beam switching, but also will produce continuously variable low-beam patterns, and control “constant ON” high beam systems that require “next-generation” headlamp hardware currently being developed by various headlamp manufacturers. For these future systems, SmartBeam generates “block-out” or “glare-free” zones around oncoming and preceding traffic, allowing light to be cast around surrounding traffic for maximum forward lighting.

“Gentex develops and manufactures its own custom-engineered, automotive-grade imagers designed specifically for forward lighting optimisation,” continued Jen. “This allows us to offer our automotive customers a fully integrated, scalable, highly functional, and competitively priced system that drives value.”

The value of improved forward lighting is well documented. Studies in the U.S. and Europe suggest that drivers significantly underutilise their high beams. Whether it's out of fear of blinding other drivers, annoyance at constantly turning them on and off, or just plain forgetfulness, studies show that drivers often don’t use their high beams even when conditions would justify their use. SmartBeam optimises forward visibility by automating high-beam usage, which allows drivers to better identify and react to potential hazards in the road ahead.

Gentex has shipped more than 1.5 million SmartBeam units since the feature debuted in the U.S. in the 2005 model year. Last year alone, the company shipped approximately 437,000 SmartBeam units compared with approximately 295,000 units in 2008. Gentex expects SmartBeam unit shipments to increase by approximately 30-40 percent in calendar year 2010 compared with 2009.

Broadcast On Beeb 1' At 10.30pm, Monday August 2nd..!.
Gears and Tears will be broadcast on BBC1 at 10.30pm on Monday Aug 2nd, and for a further five weeks after that. It is a six part series of 30min programmes.

Motorsport’s best kept secret, BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Car Racing, will be secret no longer when BBC One’s new documentary series ‘Gears and Tears’ goes to air on BBC1 at 10.30pm on Monday Aug 2nd, and for a further five weeks after that. It is a six part series of 30min programmes. It’s an obsession that’s divided two rival families for forty years; two racing dynasties who, every weekend, fight fiery gladiatorial showdowns in thundering purpose built chariots designed to push the opposition off the track.

The BBC have never commissioned a motorsport documentary series of this nature before but with over 60 cameras at some of the big events this is motorsport like no one has ever seen on TV before with 750bhp cars using locked diffs racing on a shale oval the size of an athletics track in a sport where the approved passing method is to push your opponent off the track.

The Formula 1 Stock Cars are a firm favourite in the NEC’s live action arena and this series is a chance to find out more about the drivers and families involved in the most spectacular motorsport in Britain. No other racing combines the enormous power of the F1Õs with full contact; these drivers don’t wait for an opportunity to overtake, they simply smash each other out of the way with their car’s formidable steel bumpers, usually several times a lap.

This six part documentary series follows the story behind the leading characters in a single Stock Car season and focuses upon the battle between two families, the Wainmans from Yorkshire and the Smiths from Lancashire. A latter day War of the Roses conducted in an arena where passion, pride and family are everything. Frankie Wainman Jnr and Andy Smith are arch rivals but have much in common. Their fathers, Frankie ‘Smiler’ Wainman Snr and Stuart ‘The Maestro’ Smith Snr, were the leading drivers in the ’70s and ’80s when Stock Car racing was as much a part of popular culture as Wrestling, Curly Wurlys and the Rubik’s Cube.

Racing is a way of life that demands total family commitment. Drivers are championed by wives, girlfriends, mothers and grandmas who are even more passionate than their men folk. Crashes and tears trackside are the order of the day as the episodes progress through a season that takes the competition between the two dynasties to fever pitch. Many other top drivers in F1 Stock Car racing also feature in the series.

Over the nine month 2009 season the film makers enjoyed unprecedented access to this world of everyday heroes from all walks of life. Gears and Tears celebrates values often forgotten in contemporary British society where enthusiasm, improvisation and home grown engineering skills are still king.

Techologies Power Totota Leadership On CO2 Emissions..!.
Toyota maintains top spot in latest Clean Green Cars survey

Toyota’s environmental leadership in offering motorists cleaner, more efficient cars has been confirmed by the latest industry-wide survey by Clean Green Cars. Its independent analysis of the average CO2 emissions from vehicles sold in the UK during the first half of this year show that Toyota continues to outperform all other manufacturers, improving its figures to 124.49g/km – an improvement of 6.71 per cent on the same period last year.

This compares to an average 145.14g/km for the UK new car market as a whole.

Already well below the mandatory 130g/km target set by the European Union for 2012, the level achieved by Toyota reflects the impact of both its Hybrid Synergy Drive full hybrid technology, featured in Prius and Auris hybrid, and the application of Toyota Optimal Drive across its petrol and diesel powered models.

Toyota Optimal Drive covers a wide range of improvements to engine and transmission design and engineering that have cut fuel consumption and emissions and reduced mechanical losses with no compromise in performance. The introduction of Dual VVT-i advanced variable valve timing, engine stop-start technology and components that weigh less and are more compact has had a direct impact on CO2 output. Prius adds an extra dimension to the results, its full hybrid powertrain delivering a segment-best 89g/km.

Clean Green Cars’ data are weighted against new vehicle registrations, and thus give a more accurate picture of the environmental impact of each manufacturer’s entire model range. Toyota is confident of even further improvements in its CO2 performance thanks to the launch of its new British-built Auris hybrid, the first full-hybrid family hatchback, with emissions from just 89g/km...
The progressive UK-based team switches from this season’s normal one-hour FIA GT3 European Championship “sprint” races to the historic twice-around-the-clock encounter at Spa. Its driver and sponsor line-ups have been complimented for this one-off marathon while various “long distance” components have been fitted to its Audi sports cars for the occasion.

Former Le Mans 24 Hour race winners Mark Blundell (GB) and Stefan Johansson (Sw) plus former Indianapolis 500 race winner Eddie Cheever (USA) have been drafted into the United Autosports driver squad as have Emil Assentato (USA) and Alain Li (F) with regular FIA GT3 European Championship drivers, Mark Patterson (USA) and Zak Brown (USA), while Richard Dean (GB), completes the “stellar” line-up. Brown and Dean are Co-Owners of United Autosports – the only American team entered in the Spa race.

Meanwhile season-long sponsors Remington, Cerruti and LG Electronics are joined by Roger Dubuis Watches, FXDD, Road & Track, Legends of Motorsports and the Singapore Exchange for the Belgian race.

Since the Spa Test Day earlier this month (July 7) in which the United Autosports Audi sports cars set the sixth (2m 26.394s) and ninth (2:27.289) fastest times, various components offered by Audi Sport’s customer sport center in Ingolstadt (Germany) have now been fitted necessitating round-the-clock activity at the team’s race shop near Leeds, West Yorkshire (England).

Changes include suspension components, running gear comprising of uprated drive shafts and CV joints, “24 hour race specification” front and rear bumpers, new lighting and tire pressure monitors. The Audi R8 LMS remains in normal FIA GT3 European Championship specification, which recently has seen a weight penalty of 15kg but offset by a small power increase, plus a 100-liter fuel tank for Spa.

A near 50-car field comprising of 26 in the GT3 category, eight of which will be Audi R8 LMS sports cars, is expected to contest the 24 Hours of Spa. Pre-qualifying is staged on Thursday (1400-1530) prior to three qualifying sessions at 1930-2030, 2145-2230 and 2245-2330. A warm-up is staged at 0910-0930 on Saturday (July 31) with the race getting underway at 1600.

An Audi R8 LMS achieved third place overall and winner of the G2 category in last year’s corresponding Spa race. Over eight hours of this year’s race will be broadcast “live” on Motors TV throughout Europe (Saturday 1540-1700, 1830-2100; Sunday 1030-1200, 1400-1630). NISSAN: NAMED MOTABILITY...

 Supplier Of The Year....
Another accolade for Nissan as it scoops top award from Motability Operations

Nissan praised for its flexible approach and new NV200 Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV)

Success in Motability reflected in a 60% increase in sales last year compared with 2008

Nissan has another trophy to add to the cabinet, as Britain’s largest car builder is hailed Motability Supplier of the Year in the over 10,000 registrations per year category at the fifth annual Supplier Awards presented by Motability Operations.

As the company which operates the Motability car, powered wheelchair and scooter scheme, Motability Operations recognises the people and businesses who deliver outstanding choice, excellence and customer satisfaction to over half a million customers. The Supplier Awards cover all areas of the Motability Operations business.

Mike Betts, chief executive, Motability Operations, explains what set Nissan apart from the competition: “Nissan’s flexible approach to its partnership with Motability Operations was praised with judges particularly noting efforts to reduce administration, customer support, and changes to save time for customers. Highly effective customer service completes the range of first-class achievements for Nissan in the last year, and they prove to be an excellent winner at the Motability Operations Supplier Awards.”

Judges were also impressed with Nissan’s work with Motability Operations to produce a new Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle to the market. The award-winning NV200 MPV formed the perfect basis for such a vehicle thanks to its class leading interior capacity, compact exterior dimensions and affordable prices.

The success of the NV200 has helped Nissan to achieve significant increases in sales in the Motability sector. A huge 60% sales increase last year compared with 2008 resulted in an 11% market share for Nissan – and this figure is on target to rise once again in 2010. Proving the strength in depth of Nissan’s versatile range, it’s the Qashqai that accounts for 70% of Nissan’s Motability sales while the versatile Note is also a popular choice.

Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd’s MD, Paul Willcox comments: “We are delighted to receive an award for the efforts we’ve made in the Motability sector. It’s been an area of particular focus over the past year and we have reaped the rewards both in terms of sales success and customer satisfaction. We look forward to working with Motability Operations in the future.”

The Motability Operations Supplier Awards took place at a business lunch on 16 July at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire and were hosted by BBC newsreader Huw Edwards.

 SUZUKI: THIRD GENERATION SWIFT...

 Due This Autumn... First Image..!.
Suzuki announce the release an image of the new, third generation Swift which goes on sale in the UK in the autumn.

The all-new Swift is positioned as Suzuki’s latest world strategic model and makes further developments in design, impact safety, driving performance, handling, improved fuel consumption and significantly lower emissions at 116g/km which will make it one of the very cleanest petrol engine Superminis on sale.

Extensive use of higher strength steel makes the new car lighter and stiffer than before as well as offering refinement in underbody design. The latest body structure has also helped improve impact safety for pedestrians as well as occupants.

Variable gear ratio steering, increased track and larger diameter wheels with lower profile tyres allow for even better handling than the highly acclaimed outgoing Swift that first went on sale five years ago.

New Swift has grown in length (+90mm) with a 50mm increase in wheelbase and a slight increase in height of 10mm.

For the powertrain; a new 1.2-litre petrol engine incorporating Dual VVT (Variable intake and exhaust valve timing) is utilised which produces 94PS at 6,000rpm, slightly more than the outgoing 1.3-litre unit. Torque is also improved to 118Nm at 4,800rpm.

Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is now 56.5mpg for the manual transmission model, an improvement of 7.8mpg over the previous 1.3-litre unit.

A 1.3-litre diesel engine is planned for UK introduction in early 2011; this engine emits 109g/km (down from 119g/km) and has an impressive combined fuel consumption of 67.3mpg, an improvement on the already highly credible 62.8mpg from the outgoing Swift DDiS.

Full details on UK specification and pricing will be announced later in the summer.

 Do You Know The Rules..?.
Increased numbers of holiday makers drive abroad this summer

Many drivers not aware of country-specific driving regulations

Škoda and RAC offer free European Travel Advice Guide to help keep holidaymakers safe

With this year’s flight and short-haul holiday disruptions, more people than ever are choosing to drive abroad this summer. The simplicity of the Channel Tunnel and fast ferry crossings means driving to Europe is easier than ever before, yet knowing the ever-changing foreign traffic laws and driving regulations can often be the major obstacle to an otherwise perfect holiday.

To help holiday makers, Škoda and the RAC have collaborated on an easy-to-read European driving guide aimed at clarifying the dos and don’ts of driving abroad – available free of charge at all local Škoda retailers.

For example, in France, Italy and Belgium the drink driving limit is 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood (less than the UK limit of 80mg per 100ml) and in Norway it is just 20mg. In Belarus, it is illegal to drive a dirty car and in Bulgaria it’s illegal to sound a car horn during lunch-time hours of 12pm - 4pm. When driving in Germany, it’s illegal to use a GPS navigation system that indicates the location of fixed speed cameras, and in Spain it’s compulsory for drivers to keep a reflective jacket within reach inside the car at all times.

All this information and more is available in the European Travel Advice Guide, so anyone planning to drive to the continent this summer should stop at their local dealership and pick up a copy.

As well as detailing driving regulations and mandatory equipment, it also lists any recommended items required to drive safely in more than 40 European countries.

John Bower, head of aftersales at Škoda UK comments: "Driving abroad should be an enjoyable experience and our aim is to provide travel information to our customers so that they have one less thing to worry about. We urge anyone driving abroad this summer to contact their local Škoda retailer and ask about the relevant regulations."

Audi is remaining true to its core philosophy of Vorsprung durch Technik, or advancement through technology, by launching its UK customer magazine as a cutting-edge app for the recently released iPad. Created and developed for the new digital device by its existing publisher, Northstar, the new Audi Magazine app uses the latest publishing technology to take the award-winning title to a whole new level.

The Audi Magazine iPad app is specifically designed to take the initial content of the already successful printed publication and expand it. Unlike many magazine apps, it goes beyond flat-page replications, instead presenting something that is multi-layered, expansive and revolutionary. It faithfully reproduces the content of the paper magazine - but adds floating text over high-definition photographs, smoothly animated box-outs, picture galleries, videos and full-screen 360-degree rotating views.

"Audi has always been an early adopter, whether it be of mechanical or digital technology," says Peter Duffy, Audi UK’s head of marketing. "The Audi Magazine app is the latest example of our commitment to Vorsprung durch technik. This product will genuinely enhance Audi Magazine's already rich content, bringing the excitement of Audi further to life."

The Audi Magazine app can be downloaded completely free of charge at Apple's App Store. It has already broken into the Top 50 chart of most-downloaded free apps achieving more than 15,000 downloads in the first two weeks.

 Again With Nilfisk' Contract....
Nilfisk Advance, a Danish manufacturer of professional powered floor cleaners, polishers, vacuums and pressure washers has selected a fleet of 25 Peugeot 3008 Sport Hdi 110s for its UK sales force.

With Peugeot’s renowned driveability allied to a high quality driver’s space, great internal volume and a host of practical touches, driver preference has had a strong influence on the choice of the award-winning crossover. It will replace the staff’s much loved Peugeot 407 SWs after the end of the current three-year contract.

Yet the hard figures: over 55 mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of just 137g/km from the Peugeot HDi diesel engine, along with strong residuals for this highly sought after car, also made an extremely strong business case.

Nigel Birrell, MD, Nigel Birrell Fleet Management, who looks after the Nilfisk Advance UK fleet, said: “Nilfisk were looking to Peugeot to provide an alternative to 407; a vehicle that would offer low CO2 emissions, a modern driving experience and the latest styling, whilst maintaining the comfort, reliability and practicality that they had previously enjoyed. The 3008 surprised us with its all round suitability and is continuing a relationship with Peugeot that dates back to the 406 in 1997.”

Phil Robson, Director - Fleet & Used Vehicle Operations at Peugeot UK, said:“The 3008 is certainly proving a formidable vehicle for both private and business users, with orders easily outstripping our projected figures. With its raised seating position, high quality interior and assured driving characteristics, coupled with Peugeot’s renowned efficient, low CO2 engines, the 3008 is leading a shift from traditional fleet cars to a more discerning driving experience.”

This new book from Veloce's Rally Giants Series relates how Lancia, and Abarth, speedily developed a new Delta competition car after the exciting but dangerous Group B rallying category had been killed off in May 1986. It tells us how the HF 4x4 evolved through the years – first into the Integrale with its original 8-valve engine, then the Integrale 16V, and ultimately the Integrale 16V Evo 1. The Integrale was both the most successful Lancia rally car – it completely dominated the sport for years – and the last, as the car came to the end of its career in 1993, when the Italian giant withdrew from the sport.

It was also a great commercial success, as author Robson confirms: 'Even though the design is now more than twenty years old, it is still a well-loved favourite of all fast-car fanatics.'

This book is a 'must have' for any Delta/Integrale fan and is available from bookshops or www.velocebooks.com

 AUTOGLYM: CONCOURS NEWCOMER...

 Scores Quartet Of Summer Wins....
Concours entrant picks up four trophies in first year of competition

Painstakingly modified 15-year old Volkswagen Golf is exquisitely re-engineered and finished

Passionate car modifier, Mark Byrne, has secured an unprecedented four concours wins with a 15-year old Volkswagen Golf in his very first summer season of competition.

Proving that any motorist with sufficient dedication and passionate attention-to-detail can achieve spectacular results, 25-year old Mark Byrne from Sutton in Surrey has astonished judges, established concours regulars and event spectators alike. His Volkswagen Golf – bought eight years ago for £3,500 as a base 1.4-litre L model – is now one of the most envied rides in the increasingly popular modified cars scene.

The Golf is finished in Silverstone Blue – a colour borrowed from his BMW M3 – and is fitted with a Volkswagen Corrado engine bored out from 2.9-litres to 3.0-litres which produces 220 bhp.

The modified concours champ collected its first trophy in the Autoglym Best In Britain competition at the International Styling and Tuning Show at Silverstone in April. It then won the Ultimate Show Car Competition at the Modified Nationals held at the Peterborough Showground in late May. Most recently, it was awarded top prize in the Ultimate Challenge for Modified Cars at the Bromley Pageant of Motoring in June, where the pristine display under the bonnet also won the Best Engine award.

Owner Mark, who has undertaken the majority of the modifications himself without specialist training, said: “I am thrilled to have my efforts recognised with competition wins. I have always been keen on cars, but fell into modifying a little by accident, just because some of my friends were doing it.

“I started off just doing small bits and bobs, but it soon turned into an addiction. I’ve even covered much of the underneath of the car in carbon fibre and chrome so it’s beautiful to look at when it’s on an inspection ramp.”

Paul Caller, CEO of Autoglym, said: “It’s unprecedented that anyone should win four concours trophies back-to-back, but to do so in their first year of competition makes the feat even more remarkable. Mark’s passion and thoroughness in ensuring every part of the car has been attended to is awe-inspiring. He is a shining example of how even someone without previous experience can modify their car and produce a result that is absolutely stunning.”

Mark uses only Autoglym products to wash and finish his car in preparation for concours events. Mark now plans to take the car to European concours events and to visit the famous Nürburgring in Germany to test and improve the Golf’s performance credentials so they match its visual impact.

It’s set to raise funds for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, and is one of the highlights of the prestigious ‘Silverstone Classic’ motorsport extravaganza planned for the famous circuit from 23-25 July 2010.

Celebrities who have been preparing for the tough race include TV chefs Heston Blumenthal and James Martin, Strictly Come Dancing’s Brendan Cole, actor Tom Chambers who won ‘Strictly’ in 2008, former Watford and England footballer Luther Blissett, TV presenter Lord Charles Brocket, rocker Rick Parfitt Junior and drummer Neil Primrose from the band Travis.

BBC Radio 2 DJs Johnnie Walker and Richard Allinson, and BBC Sport journalist Jonny Saunders, are also competing in the race, while legendary DJ ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris is Team Manager.

The road-going versions of the Abarth 500 have been modified to meet race safety specification. All the cars are finished in the historic Campovolo Grey racing colours of Karl Abarth, together with branding from Britain’s largest and most popular driving school, BSM.

“The Abarth 500 esseesse provides our celebrity drivers with the ideal introduction to motorsport,” says Ivan Gibson, head of Abarth in the UK. “And it demonstrates that, just as it was back in the 1960s, Abarth’s saying: ‘Small but wicked’ is still very much in keeping with the brand.”

After the race, the limited edition event cars will be autographed by the drivers and made available for sale. The celebrities will be raising funds for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK via sponsorship on their cars. Run in memory of one of Britain's best-loved footballers, the fund supports research into bowel cancer.

The Silverstone Classic is the biggest classic racing festival in the world as well as one of Europe's most entertaining car-themed events. It features some of the rarest and most valuable racing cars in the world.

 Vans Break Cover..!.
The first images and details of the new generation Caddy and Caddy Maxi range have been released ahead of the vehicle’s world debut at this September’s IAA Hanover Commercial Vehicle show and arrival in UK Volkswagen Van Centres in November.

After six years and sales of nearly 800,000 units of the outgoing model, the new generation Caddy range promises to be more economical to run, with more safety features, enhanced quality and refinement, plus improved environmental credentials. These improvements aim to continue the Caddy’s success as one of Volkswagen’s best-selling models around the world – even as far away as Australia.

Visually, the new generation models are refreshed with the latest frontal styling found across all new Volkswagens, such as the latest Polo and Transporter. There are also new rear light clusters, plus roof rails available for the first time, and the option of cornering lights. It is a similar story inside, where new instruments, steering wheels and audio/navigation systems plus the option of Bluetooth connectivity enhance the Caddy range with more quality and style.

Under the bonnet there is a completely new range of four of Volkswagen’s latest common rail, four-cylinder TDI engines which are up to 13 per cent more fuel-efficient. This includes two 1.6-litre TDI engines producing 75 PS and 102 PS, plus two 2.0-litre TDI units producing 110 PS and 140 PS. These are quieter, more refined and economical, with cleaner Euro5 standard levels of emissions. Other new features introduced to the new generation Caddy include Volkswagen’s latest seven-speed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION four-wheel drive.

BlueMotion Technology models will now be available in the van and passenger-carrying models with the 1.6-litre engine, offering the ultimate in economy and low emissions. These use Start/Stop and battery regeneration systems to help deliver carbon dioxide emissions of as low as 129 g/km and an average fuel consumption of up to 57 mpg, giving a potential range of up to 735 miles on one tank of fuel.

The new generation Caddy range will have ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) standard on every model. Other new safety features include daytime running function for the headlights and automatic activation of the hazard lights under emergency braking.

The seven-seat Caddy Maxi Life model will be renamed the Caddy Maxi MPV, and for greater flexibility and loadspace, the second row of seats in this model, and the five-seater Caddy Maxi kombi and window van, will be able to be removed completely rather than simply folded forward as is the case now. As ever, the MPV’s bench seat in the third row is also removable.

Full details of prices and specifications are expected to be released next month.
